Rugby made their superior physical presence tell from the outset. Thompson made several telling saves before Rugby went ahead.

Two more goals followed before Melton got to grips with a lively attack.

The second half was a different story as Melton's confidence grew.

Bailey, Durrant and Smith combined well before Dymond's superb pass found Hacking who fired the ball home.

As Melton pressed for more goals, they were left vulnerable to the counter-attack and Rugby slotted home a fourth.

Melton heads did not go down and they played their best hockey of the match.

Man-of-the-match Northing was solid, turning defence into attack, while Pearson, Hatherley and Hacking all forced good saves.

Melton: J. Thompson, T. Humm, D. Pearson, H. Snow, A. Durrant, J. Smith, L. Bailey, D. Hacking, W. Hatherley, S. Northing, M. Dymond.
