WEDNESDAY, noon: Melton HC Ladies' edged out rivals Leicester after a hard-fought affair to maintain their fine start to the season.

In-form Melton were missing key players including captain Natalie Willcock, the influential S. Willcock and injured goalscorer Foode.

Leicester had the better of the first half with only Poyzer's fine keeping ensuring the scores stayed level with several fine saves.

Melton took advantage of an injury to Leicester playmaker Gnash to break down the right and after fine interplay between Hatherly, player-of-the-match Simpson and Rowbotham, Prophet was put through the middle and raced clear to calmly finish past the advancing keeper.

The second half was much tighter with Melton controlling things better.

Gutsy play from Hatherley, Heerey and stand-in captain Simpson won the midfield battle, while the defence of Hallam, Pacey, Baker, Johnson and Salih held firm, marshalled by the experienced Pacey.

Johnson and Salih were particularly impressive having stepped up from the Seconds, as was the returning Hallam.

With the pace of Fare, Prophet and Rowbotham in attack, chances started to come with Prophet putting the ball in the net only for the umpire to disallow it for dangerous play.

Leicester threw everything forward in the last 10 minutes, but Melton held on.
